How Can I Control My Appetite?

The Results of an Imbalanced Diet

The subject of weight and “the battle of the bulge” are being fought on a full scale in countries like the US and the UK, the need for eating healthy has become a source of global alarm. Where can we strike a balance? While obesity is a problem, the truth is that anorexia is fast catching up. –Wouldn’t it seem odd that the two disorders are totally opposite, yet both are raising awareness? On one side of the scale we have obesity and on the other we have anorexia. Obesity is seen as a medical condition where excess fat is accumulated by the body and can lead to ill health. Anorexia is an eating disorder wherein a person withholds food from themselves because they are morbidly afraid of weight gain. In the 50s, we used to call the ideal dress size a “perfect 10”, but today it’s called a “perfect 0”…where did we go wrong?

In today’s world everything is quick…and not just “quick” but “super quick”! We have quick travel, quick communication, quick dating, quick divorce, quick studies, quick food, and as a result on most fronts: quick death. Although this may seem a pretty broad statement to make, let’s not forget the universal law that Mother Nature teaches us: there must be Balance in all things.  Just as the basics to maintaining a beautiful garden is the proper balance of the elements, so the secret to maintaining a beautiful body is to have a balanced diet and lifestyle. Or, as one dietician put it: Too much of anything can kill!

The Food Pyramid

As kids, my Grandma was adamant that we always followed the food pyramid. “Nature has provided everything in direct proportion to our needs,” she used to say. Traditionally, the Food Pyramid servings per day from each group are as follows:

6-11 Servings—Bread, Cereal, Rice and Pasta Group

3-5 Servings—Vegetable Group

2-4 Servings—Fruit Group

2-3 Servings—Milk, Yogurt, and Cheese Group

2-3 Servings—Meat, Poultry, Fish, Dry Beans, and Nuts Group

Sparing Servings—Fats, Oils, Sweets

Bread, Cereal, Rice, and Pasta are pretty common all over the world. The grains needed for them grow plentifully, and that is because nature knew that we would need these for energy.  Fruits and vegetables are the next most plentiful thing on earth, and that is because, after energy, vitamins C and A, iron, and calcium, as well as other nutrients, are the things that our bodies thrive on. Milk, Yogurt, and Cheese, though unique, are served in the same quantity as Meat, Poultry, Fish, Dry Beans, Eggs, and Nuts. These are our source of protein, phosphorus, vitamin A and D, iron, zinc, and vitamin B12. Fats, Oils, and Sweets are to be used least of all as our bodies require only small amounts of these to thrive. An over use of fats can result in being overweight, and an over use of sweets like sugar can lead to acne, aged skin, obesity, heart disease, and cancer.

If you need an Extra Boost

If you are overweight or underweight, the goal should not be to be a Victoria’s Secrets model but to have a body that is healthy, fit, and serves your purpose. Eating healthy is easier said than done, and having a healthier body can’t happen overnight. Instead of cutting out all your favourites in one go, or even just not eating altogether, remember that the key is in “how much”. Be sparing in the things that your body does not need by filling up on the things which it does.

The stomach is a lot like a balloon and will hold whatever you fill it with and stretch to accommodate the extras. If you are constantly filling it till it’s stretched, then the amount needed to fill it will be more. Eat less at a time. Try eating in six small meals, by splitting each meal into two with a one and a half to two hour gap in between, this works wonders on weight loss for most food lovers.

Many people are rushing to the use new appetite suppressant pills that make them feel fuller and expel the need to eat continually. Pharmaceutical firms are now introducing weight loss supplement tablets, like BioApp, that are made from natural substances like seaweed and kelp. Although there are many weight loss supplements like XLS Medical Fat Binder out on the market, be sure that you get advice from your doctor or dietician to ensure that is what your body needs.
